On this prowling night, I remembered that I need to send the final payment for our vacation in August, and wished it was daytime so I could walk to the post office. Wait...why would it have to be daytime?! I almost gasped with my revelation that I could indeed increase my nighttime wanderings to the outside world!!! I live pretty much in Natick Center, so I absolutely wasn't concerned about my safety. I put on some semi-decent clothes and hit the streets at 3am.
I've always been completely bewitched by the stillness of the middle of the night, and fascinated by the folks that are out at that hour. After I walked to the post office and mailed my letter, I decided to take the (very)long way home. I walked ever so slowly and savored every ounce of the cooler night air, sultry with the summer haze that's been upon us. It was raining just a little bit, enough to give me cool little goosebumps every now and again. I wandered around the common, mouth wide open with the novelty of having the whole town to myself! I saw a few cars out, and couldn't help but wonder if they were headed home from a long night out, or headed out after a short night in? Going to the airport? Driving a crying baby around, willing it to sleep?
At one point I was walking down Main St, slow as molasses, and I heard a car coming towards me from the distance. Seeing as I was not wearing a bra and was enjoying my invisible self, I amused myself my ducking behind a trash can when it drove by. I did this a couple more times as I walked down the street, in addition to stopping a couple of times to just stand still and look around me. At some point I realized there was a woman sitting on the stoop of her apartment having a ciggy break, watching my every stealthy move. I can't even imagine what she thought of me! I tried to play it cool (and cover my ta-tas) but I think she was on to me.
Eventually I meandered back to home, where I'm sitting at the table wondering if some other wandering soul is out in the street gazing at my lit-up house and wondering what I'm up to. Lola was kind enough to just bring me my slipper (more on that phenomenon later) so I think I'll go give her some
