Not by the pain in my shinny-shin-shins

I finally visited a specialist yesterday to discuss the pain in my inner shins. I’ve been putting it off since October, and I needed to just pull the band-aid off theoretically to know if it was bad or not so bad.
Imagine if you will a blister on your heel. You feel it getting tender in your shoe and it hurts, but once you look at the little sucker and attempt to continue walking/running, it’s all you can do to not imagine it popping and generally hurting 110% more. I was doing the same thing with my shins. With every painful step I was taking, I was imagining splintered bone fragments shattering and spreading throughout my calf. (Could I BE any more dramatic?) Thus, I was mentally slowing myself down in order to reduce the impact. No bueno.

So I drove to Dr. Bergman’s office (Team Bergman all the way, btw) and I am shown to this giant chair. I may be isolating myself into the ‘elderly’ age category here, but did anyone watch Pee Wee’s Playhouse? Remember Chairry, the big blue chair? I’m pretty sure I sat on her face. Her arm was out waving and everything!

My Chairry (note that is a normal sized vacuum behind her):
The real Chairry:

Besides that, Dr. Bergman was awesome. Explained everything in great detail and said “Although the easiest way to heal would be rest, I know you’re a runner so I’m not even going to suggest it.” THANK YOU. He recommended that I try BioSkin Calf Skins for 3 weeks, along with Aleve and “icing the crap out of them” after I run.

If that doesn’t work, I will have to go for a bone scan and/or MRI to rule out stress fractures. He’s hesitant to do those right away due to the amount of radiation combined with the fact that I have a uterus. Yikes.
If there are no stress fractures, the other option could be compartment syndrome. This is kind of gross, and the only cure is surgery. He said “the other options are elephants. Compartment syndrome is a zebra.” Ummmm…okay.

After I went to see him, I was feeling a renewed confidence in myself and my trunks and fit an extra 0.3 miles in my 25 minute running block for C25K W7D1 over last week’s run!

TRY AND STOP ME.
