Friends of friends

This weekend I had the opportunity to meet the best guy friend of my best guy friend who I had not previously met. We had that moment upon meeting when he went to shake my hand and I went in for a hug (because, duh…we’re both best friends with the same best friend, which makes us step-best friends or some other weird connective relationship, right?). I’d be lying if I said that was the first (or fifth) time I’ve done that.

It’s just kind of a weird situation, where you see pictures of the other person and hear stories about them so often that you feel like you know them…but you don’t.

My personal belief is that if you can ever skip over the ‘getting to know someone’ phase and cut right to the friendship you should. I’m not one for small talk or censoring my thoughts, so I feel like it’s just easier and more fun to go from ‘so I hear you’re an accountant’ to ‘did I tell you about the time I sharted in church?’ as soon as possible.

Am I alone in this thought?

Does this have anything to do with anything? (No, it does not.)

  1. I agree. There is an extra awkwardness here on tour because of European social customs - lots of kissing cheeks and men shaking hands every time they see each other, that sort of thing. So for me there is usually some weird combination of handshake / hug / kiss one cheek / kiss two cheeks miscommunication.

A couple of weeks ago I totally bear-hugged a guy I'd never met before (as he nervously reached out for a handshake), the longtime romantic partner of a friend of mine. The couple broke up a few days later. I can't decide if this is more or less awkward, now that I will never see the guy again.
